Disaster, in Cake Form.

You know that moment you have that brilliant idea? A project that will have great results, a recipe that you just KNOW you can make better, or an activity that you think your kids will flip for.   Yeah, one of those. I have them often.

Pinterest has been my nemesis and my joy when dealing with these types of things. And a lot of the time these things work great. The kids really DO love the activity, and the project came out even better than you expected. It's always nice to have that happen. Those days are filled with joy.

And then, there is this:

Yeah, that is my mother-in-law's birthday cake. It is a disaster.

A Cake Disaster.

I was going to make this chocolate cake, with yummy fudgy frosting. I have made them before. They are delicious. And to be fair, this cake is delicious too. But normally my cakes turn out pretty too.

What happened was: I was wandering the grocery store ALONE, and I am thinking to myself, I want to make T's cake extra special. Should I put strawberries in it? Maybe some nuts on top? And then I saw it.

A box of turtle brownies.

That's IT!!!  I will put a layer of caramel sauce in the center of the cake. I can just get extra frosting so I can put a dam around the outside of the layer, yes! That will work! And so I merrily set out to find caramel sauce. Which I did.

And I came home. And I put down the first layer, frosted it, and put a thick ridge around the outside with some extra frosting. And then I poured in the caramel. And it oozed out the side. I tried adding more frosting. Nope. Ok, maybe I can seal it with the next layer of cake. Nope. I tried to frost the sides to keep it in. No dice. And now, I have a chocolate cake that is covered in fudgy frosting, leaking caramel all over my cake dish.

And I will serve it proudly, well maybe sheepishly, but I WILL serve it.  And I will laugh at my mistake.

Because life is messy. And sometimes messy tastes really, really good.
